Thelonious Funk Sessions #226 (Detroit/DEMF 2015 Special)

Greetings,

This week is all about Detroit & its legendary festival held every Memorial Day Weekend at the Hart Plaza. If you are a truly into the music that I have played on this show you are fully aware of much of an event it is. If you have never been, I urge you to go. I attended my first DEMF back in 2010 & it was quite an experience. So for this show I not only wanted to play music from the artists that were scheduled to be there, I also wanted to pay tribute to the various talented artists that make ‘Tha D’ what it is.
The first part of the show features all Detroit natives & I feel a good tune to start the show off with is an intstrumental hip-hop tune from Moodymann’s Mahoghani Music imprint by Nick Speed. Definitely speaks of how much Detroit has changed since the Riots in 67. I have music from other Motor City producers such as Andres, Kai Alcé, Marcellus Pittman & Theo Parrish. This is followed by music from Kyle Hall, Scott Grooves, Drivetrain & Omar S. Underground Resistance has been crucial combining social issues with techno. If you could imagine the experience of seeing the empowering tune Transition performed live with pictures of Rosa Parks & Martin Luther King in the background. This tune was covered several years later by Spanish techno producer Eduardo De La Calle. More music from more prominent figures in the scene such as Moodymann, Kenny Larkin, Jeff Mills & the recently retired Terrence Dixon under his Population One guise. Sean Tate gets a rerub from Rick Wilhite along with Robert Hood & The Oliverwho Factory rounding off the first part of the show.
The second part includes music from the artists that were performing at Hart Plaza. This includes music from Fort Romeau, Jay Daniel, Ten Walls, Terrence Parker & the Elevator (Kevin Saunderson). I have included some more classics from Recloose & Eddie Fowlkes. More favorites of my mine in recent years by Joy Orbison, Disclosure & Matrixxman. Henrik Schwarz performing live is a sight to behold. More great artists that made the trip to the Hart Plaza included Nina Kraviz, Rødhåd, Kimyon, Developer, Donato Dozzy & Ben Sims. As you know I’ve been a huge advocate for recognizing the techno scene in the NYC. I glad to see guys like Anthony Parasole get the respect they truly deserve. Dutch techno legend Steve Rachmad showcased his Sterac guise as well as Marcel Dettmann at the Underground stage. Robert Hood performed under his Floorplan moniker at the Detroit Love showcase in the Made In Detroit stage. I am quite sure he played the tune I played to round off the show.
Enjoy The Music,
